If you’ve been searching for a new compact SUV, you’ve likely been flooded with options. Two of the most popular models on the market, and ones we personally love, are the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain, the latter of which gets some significant upgrades for the 2026 model year. While these two vehicles are similar, the GMC adds additional luxury trimmings and finishes to set itself apart, and we can see this in full force for the new year’s model. If you’ve been curious about the 2026 GMC Terrain, read on to find out why it should be the top contender for your next new vehicle in Muscatine.

GMC Terrain Redesign and Specs

Front-facing view of the 2026 GMC Terrain Elevation interior.

The 2026 GMC Terrain gets modest updates from the 2025 model, specifically with a bolder, truck-adjacent design thanks to a more striking grille and LED headlights that have been trimmed down to an attractive, thin design. The body gets some sleeker lines, but the big addition in terms of the exterior and redesign is the addition of two new finishes: Glacier White Tricoat and Downpour Metallic.

For the 2026 GMC Terrain Specs, things mostly remain the same. The standard engine is a 1.5L, turbo four-cylinder model worth 175 horsepower; there’s also now a 2.0L turbo engine for 250 horsepower. You have your choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, though your decision comes with a different drivetrain. FWD gets a continuously variable transmission; AWD gets an eight-speed automatic transmission. Properly equipped, you’ll be able to tow up to 1,500 lbs. with the 2026 GMC Terrain.

As a note, fuel economy ratings have yet to be released, but based on the 2025 GMC Terrain, you can expect roughly 26 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway.

2026 GMC Terrain Interior and Tech

The GMC Terrain got a few nice updates to the cabin, including redesigned seats (with standard heated front seats) for additional coziniess on long drives. No sizing updates have been made from the 2025 model; the Terrain still seats up to five passengers comfortably in 103.2 cubic feet of passenger volume, and cargo remains unchanged at 63.5 cubic feet. Overall, the interior looks and feels like a luxury pickup truck that’s been catered to the SUV design, which is great for drivers who want a rugged feel without sacrificing comfort. If the 2026 GMC Sierra is like camping, the 2026 GMC Terrain is like glamping, and that’s awesome to have in Muscatine.

We’ll get to the new trims, but the 2026 GMC Terrain Denali, the new fully loaded option, comes with heated rear seats, a new addition for comfort features. It also features wood trimmings and perforated leather seats.

The 2026 GMC Terrain tech is also impressive, as a 15” vertically oriented infotainment system is standard across all trims, as is an 11” digital gauge display. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility is standard, and the cabin has been tweaked to reduce road noise by means of GMC’s Active Noise Cancellation.

Lastly, safety tech features include:

  • Blind-zone steering assist
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Available rear camera mirror
  • Available HD Surround Vision
  • HD Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver settings
  • And more
